what can i do?

Question
last year my garden was fruitful but 80% of it was consumed by bugs mice and other strays.  i fixed all but the bug problem.  can i plant a carnivorous plant or a few in my Indiana garden and if so which one.

Answer
Hi Kanisha,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but carnivorous plants are not effective bug control for gardens for two reasons.  First, the same type of bugs that can trouble vegetables and flowers such as, aphids and thrips, can also attack carnivorous plants.  We have to be just as careful about those pests as you do.  Second, carnivorous plants are bog plants that can't be planted in regular soil.  They grow in peat moss, and have to be very wet; much wetter than garden plants.  They make great additions to a patio or deck as container plants, or around gardens, but you can't actually put them in the ground unless you plan on building a bog garden.  This is very much like constructing a pond.

The plants suitable for outdoor growing are our U.S. natives.  You can find them on this link:  http://cobraplant.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2&zenid=8a5918bcc565253b82...
