DeRoose Alata

Question
My DeRoose Alata and my tree are currently one. I know I need to bring it inside soon, but obviously I'll need to cut a lot off, and start several new plants. Question: will it survive several nights of temps around 40 degrees +/-,with rain, since temps should be back around normal 70/50 degrees next week. I'd love to keep it outside a little longer if possible. Also there is one mini pitcher growing up higher, only about one half inch, with it's lid open. All other pitchers are normal size. Kinda cute, but is it normal?

Thanks

Answer
Hi Chuck,

This hybrid will tolerate nighttime temperatures in the 40s as long as the day temperature is in the 70s.  Now keep in mind that we are past the fall equinox, so your plant's exposure to the cool nights are longer than it's exposure to the warm days.  This may cause minor leaf imperfections, such as brown spots in new and older growth.

You can keep the plant outside as long as the nighttime temperatures remain in the mid 40s.  Be very wary of dips to the low 40s and upper 30s.  The lower the nighttime temperature, the longer it'll take for the days to warm up.

Another thing to keep in mind is that your plant will need time to acclimate to indoor conditions. Your home is a very stable environment, and your plant will really appreciate that type of conditions.

The mini pitcher is likely an upper pitcher.  Upper pitchers are normally smaller and paler.

Good growing!
