Good CP to grow outdoors in Maine?

Question
Hello -

I am looking for a CP to give to my friend who has some property in Maine (zone 4 or 5?).

He is not on the property year round and it does get pretty cold there.

I would like to build him a very small outdoor bog (can be infull sun) and d plant a few CPs there that will be able to survice outside year round, if there are any?

Are there any CPs that will be able to do well in that enviornment outdoors, year round? It can get pretty cold out there.

Matbe D Binata?

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Mark

Answer
Hi Mark,

As with any outdoor plants in Main, it comes to a matter of winter protection.  We have customers in upstate New York, Main, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota who have successfully overwintered plants in their bog gardens.  However, they heavily mulched their plants.

You mentioned that your friend isn't on the property year round, so it's a matter of whether he's willing to mulch his plants in fall.  If not, then I wouldn't recommend a bog garden at this point.  The plants will perish without the mulch.

If he is, then he can grow any of the North American or temperate species.  You can find a list of appropriate temperate species in the care sheet section of our main website:

Good growing!
