Flowers, vegetables

Question
Hi there...I live in Abilene, Texas.  I don't what "zone" we are in...but I was just wondering if you could tell me what are the best flower and/or vegetable seeds to plant in May?  Any advice would be appreciated.

Many Thanks,
Julie
Abilene, Texas

Answer
Julie,
You are just about past any danger of frost there - if your night time temperatures are reliably above fifty degrees, you can plant any of the summer veggies (tomatoes, basil etc) that you want.  You can also put in the good plants for summer long flowering: verbena, scaevola, geraniums, marigolds, zinnias, cosmos, cleome, and salvias.  These plants all tolerate heat pretty well, so they should do fine in your area.  The only veggies that it might be too late for are peas - they like it cool.

all the best,
C.L.
