Drosophyllum Pruning

Question
I generally am fastidious about pruning dead leaves off my carnivorous
plants.  For some species, I know that this is important to prevent fungus
growth.  However, whenever I've seen a mature Drosophyllum Lusitanicum in
cultivation, the dead leaves are left on the plant and form a "skirt" of a sort
below the growing part of the plant.  Is this important?  Do the dead leaves
provide support for the growing stalk?  Or is it just an aesthetic choice?  Do
you recommend pruning the dead leaves off this plant?  Or would it be better
to leave them on.  Thank you.

Answer
Because the soil is kept relatively dry, the issue of fungus isn't as extensive for Drosophyllum as it is for Drosera.  The leaves don't add any support to the stalk, so it's mostly a judgment call on your part whether you want to trim them off or not.  We choose not to trim the older leaves because it's one less task we need to do at the nursery.  Of course, if you're at all bothered by the appearance, trim off the dead leaves.  It won't harm the plant in any manner.

Good growing!
