S.Oreophila & S.Rubra. jonesii

Question
Hello Sarracenia Northwest, I always noticed that when the above plants are offered for sale anywhere that they can only be purchased in the state the nursery is located. How can a CP grower go about getting these 2 species without having to make an road trip to the nursery? I would think it would make sense to get these endangered plants into as many hands of growers as possible since it looks like their habitat is not returning anytime soon and this maybe the only way these plants will be saved from extinction. Thanks David

Answer
Hi David,

The way this works is that U.S. Fish and Wildlife has a permit you can apply for for interstate sales of endangered species.  Unfortunately, just about the only way you can actually get the permit is to have perfect documentation on where you got your plants from, and they seem to heavily favor organizations doing conservation work.  Here's the only nursery that has those permits:  http://www.pitcherplant.org/  Meadowview is a great organization, and you can buy all three endangered Sarracenia from them.  You can also get seeds from the ICPS Seedbank if you are a member:  http://www.carnivorousplants.org/

The good news in all this is that all three endangered Sarracenia are very easy plants to grow.  Sarracenia oreophila is one of our most prolific plants.

Good Growing!
