spagnum moss for mini bog

Hi,I was planing on making a mini bog but the only thing that is stopping me is everywhere i go they only have miracle grow peat, but i would like to know if i could use dry long fiberd spaghnum moss instead?

Hi Dylan,

You can use long-fiber sphagnum, but for a mini bog that is going to get expensive.

When looking for peat moss don't look in the houseplant sections of stores.  You need to go out in the garden centers and look for bales of peat moss.  They usually come in 2 cubic foot and 3.8 cubic foot sizes.  This is how you have to buy it since all of the small bags have fertilizer.  Home Depot usually carries it, as does Lowes or independent garden centers.  Here's an example:  http://www.homedepot.com/p/Premier-3-cu-ft-Peat-Moss-70976040/100626048#localiza  One word of caution, however.  If you go to Lowes, avoid Greensmix peat moss.  We've gotten peat contaminated with cow manure one time, and minerals salts just recently.  It's bad stuff!  The one in the link is good, as is Lakeland.
