Requirements List

Question
Hi Jeff, Jacob,

I would like to know if there is any "database" with min/max temperatures, light intensity, humidity, soil mix, etc. per carnivorous plants types (Sarracenia, Nepenthes,...)?

It would be good if growers could have a "one pager" with all essential requirements to check quickly.

Thanks!

JP

Answer
Hi Jean-Paul,

Some very good websites exist on individual species and Genus, but I've never seen a single comprehensive guide such as your describing.  Part of the problem with doing this is growing conditions from place to place can be so different, even in the same geographic area.  Often what works for one person doesn't work for another.  The prime example of this is soil mixes.  Soil mixes often need to be adjusted to match how plants are being watered, and weather conditions.  This is why you see as many different mixes for Nepenthes as you do different kinds of Nepenthes.  In addition to this, individual species often need specific conditions for them.  For instance, even in the Genus Sarracenia, they generally grow the same, but certain species like slightly different conditions; some a little wetter, some a little deeper soil, etc...  My experience has been that even in general gardening, "all in one" guides such as Sunset, Hortus Botanicus, etc... can give you a general idea of what to do, but you still need to find out more about specific plants.  The general guides can give you just enough information to get you in trouble.

Good Growing!
