mini cacti

Question
I've had a 4" pot with 5 kinds of cacti for about 10 months, it was root-bound when I bought it & I was told to leave it that way rather than separate them.  The burros tail sent off some shoots which fell off & I potted them, all growing.  The burros tail has 8 sprouts now, some 7" long.  When will they fall off?  Another plant sent a shoot straight up off the top, started leaning & then the whole plant collapsed.  Is this root rot from 2 much water?  Should I replant the cacti that didn't die?  Thanks.

Answer
Dear Diane,

I'm not sure about the Burros Tail, but it sounds like your other cacti did rot. Normally, cacti will rot from too much water. Some are more sensitive than others. And sometimes when you buy a pot of cacti like that, who ever put it together is more concerned about looks rather than whether or not the plants will all survive the same enviroment.

And yes, I would re-plant the plants that didn't die. If there is a fungus involved, you don't want it to infect the other plants.  Good luck.

Sincerely,

Greg
