FORCING PRICKLY PEAR CACTUS TO FLOWER

Question
I HAVE A PRICKLY PEAR CACTUS THAT GREW FROM A SEED FROM FRUIT I PURCHASED.
THE CACTUS IS SEVERAL YEARS OLD AND HAS NEVER FLOWERED.
CAN YOU PROVIDE SOME GUIDANCE AS TO WHETHER THE PLANT CAN PRODUCE FLOWERS AND FRUIT AND IF SO HOW I CAN DO IT.

THANKYOU FOR YOUR HELP

T. DINO

Answer
Dear Tom,

Prickly pear cactus cannot be forced to flower, that I know of anyway, especially if it is young. Most cacti only flower after they reach maturity, which for a prickly pear may be many years.

Without knowing the exact type, I cannot guess as to when it will flower and set fruit. If you can send me a detailed description or better yet a picture, I may be able to give you a better answer. You can email me a picture to [email protected] if you like. Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Greg
