totem pole cactus with black holes

Question
We just returned from three weeks away and our in ground totem poles (3 feet high) have black holes in the tops and black spots.  The holes are about 1/2 inch in diameter and go into the plant about 1/2 inch or more.  It appears something might be eating it, but why the black spots?
We live in Tucson.

Answer
Ann,

I believe your diagnosis is correct (maybe a Gila woodpecker starting a nesting site), however the black spots are a mystery. I have seen your type of plant develop spots for no apparent reason, but most likely they are caused by an insect. Most animals will not touch your plant because it tastes so bad (no need for large spines), but certain insect will still attack it. Unfortunately, there is no good preventative although you can try a malathion based pesticide. Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Greg
