What is wrong with this orchid?

Question

Black spots on leaves
Black spots on the leaves,  good new growth, no flowers, it had one when it was given to me several months ago. What is this and what do I do about it?

Answer
Hi Terri,

The black spots on the leafs appear to be fungus damage.  Your orchid is what is commonly called a bifoliate cattleya because each pseudobulb had 2 leafs.  By the way, the other cattleya you have is called a unifoliate since there is one leaf per pseudobulb.

The reason it has not made any blooms is because it is not the right time of year for it to do it.  Most cattleyas produce their flowers from late winter into summer with the flowers lasting several days to several weeks.  Also, like the other cattleya, this one could be grown in more sunlight.

Hope this has helped.
