How to take care of potted petunia

Question
I bought to potted petunia plants and I have them on the north side of my house to help attract humming birds. No insturctions came with taking care of these plants. What do I do? Should I cut these to keep the flowers producing.
Thanks
B. Trowbridge

Answer
petunias like a lot of sun. they also need to be deadheaded(remove old flowers) frequently to keep new flowers appearing. you may want to buy more shade loving plants(impatiens, coleus, etc.) for that area. visit a few local garden centers/nurseries to find someone knowledgeable on hanging plants. buy your products from them & they should be glad to help educate you on how to choose & care for hanging plants.
water by weight. put a saucer under the pot when watering. let it sit in the excess water for 5-10 minutes and then pour off the excess. pick up(or lean) the pot. it should feel heavy. don't water again until it feels considerably lighter in weight(usually about once every 2-5 days depending on pot size, sunlite, temps, etc.). do not let it go too dry(wilt). apply fertilizer monthly during the growing season.
good luck
