Iris plants

Question
I have iris flowers that have multiplied over the years and need to be thinned out. After the flower blooms when you you cut them down? When can I transplant some of these to other locations around my yard? They have overgrown in one area and need to have some thing done. I would appreciate your knowledge on this..

Answer
Cut iris foliage back to 5" above ground and dig the clumps. divide the clumps with a shovel or knife and discard the inner portion which is likely dark brown and dead. keep at least one set of leaves ("fans") with each clump. replant and water well. Do this after flowering or in early fall. Not during the hottest summer months.
