petunia/soil

Question
What kind of soil should I plant my petunias in? I recently learned that peat moss adds acid to soil and wondered wether I should put it around my petunias. What should I add to my soil., and what should I feed them for a lot of flowering? I live in NE Ohio.

Answer
Petunias will flower in a wide range of soils, so regular garden soil is fine. Just make sure you mulch on top of the soil (spread some shredded leaves, hardwood mulch, etc) to even soil temperatures and keep water from evaporating too fast. Fertilize every month using a good quality flowering fertilizer (such as 5-10-10, 10-10-10, 15-30-15, 20-20-20, etc). Do not use lawn fertilizer on petunias.

Don't worry about acidifying the soil for petunias. They are not really fussy.

After first heavy flush (when the main flower power seems to die out) pinch out the growing tip of each plant. This will remove flowers temporarily, but in 2-3 weeks many more flowers will return.

Keep them well watered. Do not allow them to dry out (this can be improved by mulching as explained)
