spike plants

Question
I buy these every year to accent my pots; they always look so good in the fall after flowers have died; can I keep spike plants inside over the winter with adequate light and watering?

Answer
Hi Dawn:

Yes you can overwinter your Dracaena spikes inside, if you have the room and light to do so. Next year you will have a lovely big spike. Just make sure you put it in a big enough pot to hold the roots.

Actually this New Zealand plant will grow into a tree if you keep it long enough. Don't worry though it takes many years to get that big.

They are not terribly fussy plants. Water it when it is very dry and then give it a good soaking and fertilize with a half strength fertilizer about once a month. Never fertilize a dry plant because you can burn the roots. Water thoroughly then add the fertilizer.

Hope this helps          Myrna
