spanish moss in crape myrtles

Question
I have spanish moss bad in my LARGE white crape how do i get rid of it kill it. I have heard of mixing baking soda with water and spraying but cant remember the ratio. Maybe i even have the baking soda part wrong.  Please advise.  I live in mulberry/south lakeland, florida.

Answer
Dear Sherry, Unfortunately, the best way to remove the Spanish moss is to remove it by hand and actually that is how I would start out.  You might even want to get a step ladder and remove as much as you can first as high as you can reach.  Then the spray that is actually recommended to remove the moss is copper sulfate at the rate of 6 tablespoons to 1 gallon water.  You will have to spray thoroughly and you will probably have to spray more than once, but now is a good time to do it while the crape is dormant.  The baking soda spray is generally used for fungal infections but it might work on the moss since it will severely distort their preferred pH.  The recipe for that is 1 tablespoon baking soda, 2 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil, and 1 tsp liquid soap to 1 gallon of water.  Either way definitely hand pick the Spanish moss first as it will make the spraying more effective.  Good luck.  Melissa
