spongy wood

Question
I have a Magnolia Tree 25ft. tall. A limb that was eventually removed many years ago before I purchased property and is partially closed and 8in. across in diameter. It is completely spongy with a  light in color wood.It can be pulled out by hand at least 6in. deep. The limb is very swollen in this area with another limb  removed inches from that area and is solid. It is really  been just around the other side of limb approximately 6in. farther up. Can I save this tree? Thanks

Answer
Brian:
This spongy wood is probably the result of decay, which can be caused by numerous bacteria/ fungi.  From what you describe, I would suspect that the decay may have entered the main stem(s) of the tree.  This is a slow yet progressive process that cannot be reversed.  Good fertilization and especially water provided during dry periods can help prolong the life of the tree for many yrs. At some point, the tree will ultimately succumb.
