Live Oak about 3 yrs old

Question
On the trunk of the live oak tree there are several rows of small holes completely around the tree. Is this some type of insect boring these holes, if so how do I treat the tree?

The tree is full of leaves and very green, it looks very healthy.

Answer
Dear Brenda, You definitely have borers on your tree.  There are several types of borers that will feed on live oak, basically they would be large beetles.  However, the damage comes from the larvae of these beetles that are burrowed beneath the bark.  To kill these bugs, the best thing to get would be Ferti-Lome Borer, Bagworm, and Tent Caterpillar Spray.  The active ingredient is Spinosad which is an organic ingredient.  The borer larvae will eat the spinosad spray and die.  Be sure to spray the entire tree as much as possible, especially the trunk.  Hopefully the insect damage hasn't gone to the core of your tree and it will recover.  You may need to spray more than once but this will take care of your problem.  Good luck, Melissa
