Maple Red Sunset

Question
I recently had a Red Sunset maple planted and noticed that some of the leaves have raised hard red spots on them.  I would like to know what this may be and if I need to treat it.  Any help would be appreciated.  I live in a Chicago suburb.

Answer
Hi

Sorry for the delay--computer crash and illness on my end.  Sounds like you are describing insect galls.  These galls should not hurt the tree, but may recur each year.  I would treat the plant with Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insecticide.  This product is mixed with water and poured on the soil around the base of the plant.  It is taken up systemically and will kill the bugs within a week or so.  It also provides protection from reinfestation for up to a year.  This should fix the problem.  You may want to wait until next spring to make this tretment for best uptake and results.  Good Luck.
