I have a little red bug that is eating the bark from my tree and the tree is dying. What is this and what can I do to keep the tree alive?

I am afraid that insects are my short coming, but I do have an office mate who might be able to help with your question.  A photo could be very useful. Can you take and send a closeup of one of these red bugs?  Try to get as close as you can to take the shot. Let me know how long it is and be sure to review your image on your computer first---to be sure it is in focus before you send.

Are these critters going in and out of a hole in the bark or are they on the outside.  If they are going in and out of a hole, is this hole like an open slit or is it a round hole?
