Lemon tree bark being peeled away

Question
We live in California. We have a lemon tree on the north side of the house planted in the ground which receives plenty of sun. I don't know the variety of lemon tree. I noticed recently small shavings on the ground and found several of the branches 2" to 1/2" in diameter have had the barked shaved off. I thought it might be a bird but the wood underneath is not pitted like being pecked with a beak. The shavings range from 1/2" to 1" in length and many are curled up. I've not seen any bugs or anything. I'm very concerned about the tree and would appreciate any assistance.

Answer
Hi Scott, that seems very strange.  The only thing I can come up with and you may know is if it is getting too much water it would make the bark peel away from the trunk.  Stop watering immediately and let it dry out.  Make sure you have no mulch around your tree, it should be bare.

If this is not the answer, you may have to get a hold of your local Agricultural Extension office and see if there is a new bug or pest in the area that is causing this.  kathy
