pecan problems

Question
Our pecan trees have produced a good many nuts this year, but the kernel did not develop.  The kernel looks and feels like cardboard on every nut I have picked up.  We have all volunteer pecan trees, and several years they have produced wonderful fruit, but the last 2 years, tho they produced nuts, the fruit has been awful.  Last year the kernels that made were very moist and did not taste good.  This year, they are papery and have no substance.  What can we do to get good fruit next year and why are the nuts so bad this year?

Answer
Margaret:
Pecan can "cycle" through good and bad producing seasons- this is not uncommon.  It may be a good idea to have your soil tested to be sure the tree is getting the proper nutrition.  This can be done through your local county Extension office- check the phone book for theat number. The test is usually free too!  Also, be sure that the tree has a good water supply, especially during the summer months. Attention to good nutrition and water is important.

Steve
