Grubs

Question
I was wondering if you knew of any shrubs that are grub resistant. I have planted shrubs and evergreen 3 times
and the grubs just destroy them.I have also treated the ground with grub stuff but the problem is my neighbor does not
treat his lawn so I think that is why I still have grubs.
I am tired of treating my ground but would like to grown shrubs all around my foundation.
Do you know of any that I could plant.
Thanks

Answer
Debbie:
The white grubs that you find in the soil usually feed on turfgrass roots primarily. They are usually found "curled up" in the soil.  Lots of granular insecticides out there that can be used. Most need to be watered in.  They can change into a variety of beetles as adults.  This grub is more vulnerable to the insecticide during specific stages of development in the soil- so timing of application is important for controlling them. I am not aware of grub resistant shrubs.  Many people have them in their lawn and never know it until the numbers get high.  With shrubs, good nutrition and water to encourage vigorous growth is useful too.  Contact your local county Extension office for information about the life cycle of this insect and best times to apply the insecticide.

Happy holidays!
Steve
