Citrus disease

Question
The backs of the leaves of my blood orange tree are covered with many hard black dot-like insects  or fungi which have made the leaves in front dark and twisted.  We have had many heavy rains recently and I wonder if this is connected.   What can I do to cure my tree?

Answer
Dorothy:

I am not quite sure what these dots may be. Can you send me a closeup photo of a leaf or two with the spots on them?  Try to get as close as you can.  Be sure to review your photo on your computer to be sure it is in focus before sending. These dots may be a type of scale insect OR they be a harmless fungus called a shotgun fungus that lives on wood mulch near plants. The fungus will not move like an insect would if you touch it. A photo would really help out.  If you are not good with a digital camera, like me, you can carry two or leaves by your local nursery or greenhouse for some advise.  Another good resource is your local county Extension office.  It is best to find out what you have before buying a bunch of stuff that you may not need.

Thanks
Steve
