fungus on oak tree

Question
I live in Florida.  We have an old oak tree.  I have noticed an orange colored organism or fungus on quite a few leaves.  The organism is oval shaped and bumpy, approximately 1/4 inch diameter.  Anything to worry about?

Answer
Hi Rosemarie:
Good to hear from folks in Florida! I lived in Ft. Myers for about 6 years. Loved the weather and the beach, didn't enjoy so much that mowing my yard almost year around though.

Without seeing your affected leaves, I would guess that it is some type of insect- perhaps a gall insect. These usually don't have a big significant impact on the overall health of a mature tree, especially if it is being cared for with regular water.  You can cut one of these open and see if there is an egg inside. If you like, you can even send me a photo and I can try to get a better ID. Just raking up any fallen leaves and destroying them is usually good enough.

Regards
Steve
