Forsythia Shrub Galls

Question
Is there anything you can do to prevent the gall's from developing?  My mother's forsythia bush is hugh and beautiful.  It now has the gall's on most of the branches.  We would like to try and prevent this from happening again if possible.  Thank you. Sharon

Answer
The problem that you are referring to is caused by a fungus called Phomopsis.  There are no chemicals available to control this problem.  If it is limited, you may be able to prune way infected stems.  Be sure to surface disinfest pruners in between each and every cut by dipping in a disinfectant such as a bleach solution (1 part household bleach + 9 parts water).  It is best to prune during dry weather periods to prevent disease spread.  The infected stems should be discarded in the trash. At the end of the season, debris under the forsythia should be raked up and discarded.  If it is necessary to remove the plant, it is not recommended to replace it with another forsythia.  The new plant could also become infected with the fungus.

You may be able to reduce the appearance of the galls by promoting health and vigor of the plant.  This includes regular watering and fertilizing.  With proper care, some infected plants can recover and appear relatively healthy.
