crape myrtle

Question
I have a crape myrtle that is 3 years old and about 8 feet in height.  I have never had a problem until this year.  I'm noticing small, new growth limbs(6-10 inches long) falling off.  The limbs are full of green leaves, though the leaves have become soft and droopy.  I'm losing about 3-4 such limbs per day, though the remaining limbs all look healthy, at least for now.  What is causing this?

Answer
John:
This growth does not sound like a disease, but merely a phenomena of growth.  Sometime when crapemyrtle is pruned incorrectly, the new growth springs forward from a single location, producing very tender twigs from that single point.  The physical connection becomes poor and the twigs sometimes snap off easily.
Contact your local county Extension office about pruning techniques to correct this common mistake.  It is called here "Crape Murder".

Steve
