Pest Control

Question
H i Mike I live in Az. and have a rosemary plant that has these little worm like bugsall over it they have made a spider web that is killing my plant what can i do ? and what are they?

Answer
Mike, it is hard to say what the pest is without a photo, but it does sound like the funnel weavil. This is a very small insect that does build a web inside the foliage of many herbs and vegetables.

Regardless of which pest it is, you can control them with a product called BT, an organic insectide otherwise known as Bacillus Thuringiensis, and more commonly sold under the brand names Dipel or MVP. It is a dust that is non-toxic to humans and beneficials but highly effective against caterpillars and most other worms. As with pyrethrum and rotenone, two other very effective organic pesticides, you can purchase this product through on-line catalogs such as Gardens Alive, Planet Natural, or locally at many garden centers.

For more information on the many organic solutions available, and for what insects they are effective in controlling, visit one the following websites:

I hope this answered your question. Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
