backyard hole

Question
Mr. Jincks,

I live in Massachusetts and have found a singular but very deep hole left (or being used by some animal). The hole is both wide and deep enough to fit an entire adult leg and appears to go straight down. Would you possibly have any ideas as to what animal could have done this?

Thank you

Answer
Hi Ruth,

I'm in Missouri and you may have different animals. Here, the most likely suspects are... groundhog, armadillo... or beaver if near water. The armadillo's tail leaves a distinct streak. Other diggers include, skunk, opposum, fox, coyote, raccoon and muskrat. Sometimes they share or take over burrows.  If you want to be rid of the critter, I make an electronic deterrent that will deter about anything on that list if set near the burrow.  The website.
