How to kill leeches and maggots

Question
I was very unhappy to find maggots and leeches in a rock covered side yard and the infestation has spread to my green (food) recycling bin.  I want to safely kill off the infestation.  What would you suggest?  Where do I get it?  How do I use it?

Thanks,
    Sharon

Answer
While the maggots and leeches are still in the crawling stage, you can use one of several organic pesticides.

BT works great on the larvae of most insects. It stands for Bacillus Thuringiensis and comes in powder form. It is sold under the brand names Dipel and MVP.

Another great control is pyrethrum. This pesticide is actually a deriviative of the chrysanthenum and is extremely effective against a wide variety of insects. It is non-toxic to humans, pets, and the environment.

You can find these products at your local garden center or through on-line sites such as Planet Natural or Gardens Alive.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Regards,

Mike
