Prolific insects - boxelder bugs

Question

Mating bugs
I have a large number of a gray insect, 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch long in my garden. they have red sides and are now mating. I'd like to know what they are, but more important, are they a problem?

Answer
Frank,

These are called boxelder bugs (sometimes maple bugs). They won't damage your garden but can be nuisance if large numbers congregate on your house as they sometimes do. Here's an article explaining this behavior http://www.livingwithbugs.com/boxelder.html and what to do about them. The bottom line is they are harmless but can be a nuisance if you have a lot of them. Post a follow up if you have questions.
