Worm like cluster on ceiling

Question
I noticed a orange spot on my ceiling 2 days ago. Today when I was cleaning up we noticed the orange spot was black. On further inspection we realized the were tiny worm like bugs. My husband sprayed pesticide on them and gently wiped them away and some were gently falling as if attached to a spider web though it was obvious no spider was around and they were not spiders themselves. We found 2 similar spots in the house one was the same worm where the other was a cluster of what appeared to be tiny black eggs. We live in lexington SC. I cleaned them away before taking any picture sorry! Thanks so much!

Answer
Christina,

The orange spot was an egg mass from a moth or butterfly and the black worms were newly hatched larvae from the eggs. These larvae do produce webs like spiders that they use to either safely drop to the ground or catch the wind and sail away (called "ballooning"). The moth probably flew in through an open door or window and laid its eggs on the wall. This is very common and harmless.
