Birds nesting in Attic

Question
Are there any ways to prevent Birds from entering through the attic vents. These are about 2" in diameter holes with screens over them that the birds are going through to nest. The screens are about 30 years old so are easy to break thru.
Is there any type of covering that can be installed on the outside to replace the screen and keep them out

Answer
First, you have to be careful about the species of bird. Any bird, other than common pigeon, house sparrow, or starling, is protected by Federal Law. You may need a permit for other species.

Second, protecting vents is easy. 1/4 inch hardware cloth will stop not only birds but bats as well.
You must make sure the birds are out of the building. Secure with a few screws and washers. Use appropriate sealing over screws to ensure water tightness.

If you worry about looks, simply paint the screen prior to use. You will be surprised how well it blends in. Note the screen will reduce airflow.
Watch out for powerlines.
