insect bites

Question
Hi Jim-
I am in the northern part of the city of Charlotte NC. Yesterday, my 2 year old grandson came into the house after playing in the back yard, and he had sevral bites on the back of his neck and under his hairline back there. All of them were crusted over with blood. He had not seemed to be distressed while playing, and has not ben itching. I did see him appear to be waving at something in the air. Could a deer fly cause multiple bites like that? are they blood suckers? Any thoughgts on what it might be? I worried about effects, but so far there doesn't seem to be any.  Thanks for any info.

Answer
It could be deer flies or one of the other biting flies all are blood feeders. Here are a couple of web linkd to information on biting flies,
