I'd use baits in the same way as they are used indoors. Place bait in out-of-the-way places - the ants will find it and carry it back to the nest. See http://www.livingwithbugs.com/ant_bait.html for ways to use these baits. Don't spray insecticides as this will make matters worse. If you use one of the paste/gel baits you should be able to put some under the dash and so forth.
