early season lawn care

Question
I live in Northern Illinois, zip code 60046, by the Wisconsin border in the NE portion of the state.  I just want to know what to apply to the lawn in this early part of spring.  Should I fertilize or plant new seed yet?  I have an older-type lawn that is not very plush, but want to have a nicer looking lawn this year. What products can you recommend as well?

Answer
A lawn should be fertilized 3 times per year in your area: late spring, early fall and late fall. I do not recommend that you fertilize too early in spring or during hot summer months.

If you would like to overseed (e.g. spread grass seeds over a thin lawn to make it more lush), then mid to end April would be a good time to do this. Loosen any bare spots with a rake and spread grass seeds. Water daily for 10-15 minutes until new grass starts to grow. Then gradually increase the time between watering and the amount of water you apply. If you sow grass end of April then also apply a so-called "starter fertilizer" at this time, otherwise do not fertilize this early on regular basis.

If you have shade in the areas then go for fine fescue grass seeds, such as hard, chewing, or creeping red fescue (avoid tall fescue). If you have sunny areas, then overseeding with perennial ryegrass, or a good all-round mixed bag of kentucky bluegrass, fine fescues and kentucky bluegrass is preferred.

Regular lawn maintenance calender for LAKE VILLA, IL:

Fertilize:
In your area fertilize late May, early September, and late October. Always apply to a dry lawn and water in with plenty of water. Contrary to common belief, a lawn in your area should not be fertilized in early spring (march/april) or during hot summer months (june through august). If you seed, then an application of starter fertilizer when sowing in april is ok.

Mowing:
Mow high and mow frequently. grass grow most actively in spring and fall, and less actively during hot summer month. Try to mow at least twice per week during peat growth period of spring and fall, and at least once or once every two week during summer. It is better to mow 2.5-3.5" tall (after cutting) as the grass will look greener, and remain healthier. Bring a ruler with you next time you mow to check how high this is and note your mower deck setting accordingly.

Watering:
If you decide to water next summer, it is better to water infrequently, but deeply, e.g. such as once per week for 2 hours rather than 15 minutes daily. During seed establishment (see above) you should water frequently and shallowly (e.g. daily for 10-15 minutes) but once the seeds have sprouted and the new grass has been mowed once, you can gradually change to an infrequent, but deep watering pattern. E.g. such as one weekly water application for 2 hours.

Good luck.
