sods

Question
i live near the shore and have a sandy dirt. i put down seed but got impatient and ordered sod.
will laying down the sod on top of the seeds be ok?

Answer
Hi Rich,

As long as the new sod can freely sink its roots into the top-soil strata without too much obstruction there should be no  problem.  Rake-away any thatch and clear weeds and old vegetation so that this critical process can happen easily with your new sod and you should be fine.

Note that some of your seed may be able to sprout and penetrate the sod to become a weed in the new lawn if the seed and sod are different grass-types or cultivars.  If this is a possible concern, you may want to hold-off on installing the sod until the seedlings of the old grass-type can be spray-killed or otherwise eradicated.

With a good fertile-loamy well draining top-soil, best quality hybrid grass type(s), 1-3 inches of water per week, plenty of sun-light, ...almost anyone can have an excellent lawn with a minimum maintenance effort.
