What should I do about my lawn

Question
Hi!

I live in northern Michigan where the grass can grow pretty long.  Right now we have wood chips on our front lawn so we don't have to mow.  I am thinking of putting some sort of stone on the front lawn so we don't have to mow.  What kind should I get that would work the best?  Thank you in advance for your response.

Your friend,
Julie Stockton

Answer
Hi Julie:
I think that's going a little too far asking a lawn expert the best way to get rid of your lawn. Although I would prefer that you keep your lawn, I will try to help you.
Various types of stone may be used for the effects they create. The material may be colored to blend in with the features of the home, patio or landscape.
Some disadvantages of stone mulch used near lawn areas are that it may get into the grass where rotary mowers could throw them and cause injury or property damage. The stones may also be handy ammunition for vandals. Stone mulched areas are difficult to keep free of debris, such as leaves and stems. It will not prevent growth of some weedy grasses.
I have a border of  river rock around the foundation of my home on the west side because the temperature radiating from the house is not conducive to good grass growth. In the spring it becomes a chore to eliminate the leaves and other debris that has accumulated over winter.

Stone is available in colors to match or complement the architecture. It is rather inexpensive. It is advisable to use black polyethylene beneath the stone to prevent weeds and prevent the rock from sinking into the soil. Perforate the black plastic about every square foot so that water does not collect in it.
