Long Island Lawn

Question
What kind of grass do you think would be best for us?  We are going to revamp our lawn - it does not look as nice as it used to and I think we will start from scratch.

Answer
"Best" does not help narrow down the choices here, Paula.  I assume you are growing grass on Long Island based on your subject line "Long Island Lawn" - but we have to go over the basics:

What kind of sun situation do you have?  Does it vary from front to back, left to right, under trees, in the shadow of the house, behind a hedge?  Or does your house bake in sun dawn to dusk?

What's there now?  Any idea what the soil is like?

What do you want to do outside?  Do you BBQ, have a pool, let out your dogs, play baseball on the lawn?  Or is this lawn strictly to compete w/ the Joneses?

Before anything - right after you answer these questions - get your soil tested.  Make sure you get the right samples as described on the Test Procedures instructions list.  Find out exactly what is, and isn't, in the dirt you have.  Perfect timing for that.

And repeat after me:  I will not use anything with the name SCOTTS on the outside of the box/bag.

Promise me you won't use chemicals.  No pesticides, no fungicides, no herbicides.  Because people who use those may as well be listed as suicides.  They are asking for a short lifespan and they often get it.  If nothing else, their quality of life is reduced.  We don't want that for you, too, right?
