fescue vs. centipede

Question
I have a small back lawn that is centipede and tall fescue.  Its half and half, literally.  I would like to have the whole yard fescue and want to know if I overseed which will win.  I've been told by a very non-expert that the centipede will choke out the tall fescue.  I'm hoping its the other way around but I have no knowledge or access to any expert knowledge on the subject, except now!  I live in North Carolina and have seen primarily centipede lawns but a few fescue and zoyzia lawns.  The centipede is not very wear tolerable as you well know and that is the reason for wanting to change.  I currently have 3 well defined paths in the yard (possibly 4 looking at the spring comeback) and no way to section these areas off.  I've tried.  Its either the dogs, the husband, or the grandkids/kids that take the shortest route.  I'd appreciate any info.

Answer
Danica,

Unfortunately your non-expert was correct.  My money would be on the centipede.  The fescue would have a hard time competing with the centipede.  Conversely, if you put centipede in a good stand of fescue it would have a hard time establishing as well.

My advice would be to go to a good lanscape supply dealer such as Helena or Southern Ag and purchase some Round-Up Pro.  Dont go to Lowes or Walmart to buy Round-Up.  If you do, it will only contain 18% active ingredient.  Round-up Pro will contain 41% active ingredient.  If you dont know how to ask them to show you how to mix it correctly.

Spray out the centipede in your yard.  Give the centipede about two weeks to completely check out.  You may need to spray again.  Make sure there is no green left...the centipede must be completely dead.  Then reseed with a good quality tall fescue.

I know it's not the easiest process but it will work.  I dont know how big your yard is but just going of an average size home lawn; you should get out of this for around $100 -$150.  This may sound like a lot but trust me it will be worth it.  When the tall fescue grows in completely, you will have a nice consistant lawn that will have lots of value to you and your family.

Thanks,
