What to do about dried out sod in NY?

Question
We just laid sod over most of our backyard. While we were away over the holiday weekend some parts became dried out and turned brown. Other parts are growing well. It seems pretty clear the problem areas are where the sprinklers aren't reaching properly. What if anything can we do now to salvage the brown sections? Some have some green, others are pure brown. THANKS

Answer
K, You've made the same mistake MANY people make when they put down sod.

They go to great lengths to make the soil underneath perfect.  They order the sod and make sure it's rolled out the day of delivery.  They water.  Then they

(a) Sit on the porch and wait for it to grow; or
(b) Water on a regular grass schedule; or
(c) Go on vacation.

In your case, I guess you didn't realize the sprinkler was not reaching the whole sod plot.  Just like new grass, you have to babysit sod.  It's a critical part of the planting.  Putting it down is NOT the end of the job.  The roots are damaged when the sod is lifted, and they have to grow down into something.  As you have discovered, you have to water it, carefully, every single day.  Just like baby grass.

Watering your brown sod would be like watering a dead tree.

The brown sections dehydrated, wilted, yellowed and finally died.  They're gone.  Kiss them goodbye.  Learn from your mistake.

Any green is still salvagable.  You can use it as a plug and if you put enough of them together you'll have a square foot, maybe more.

Sorry, k, to be the bearer of such sad news.  But there are worse things that could happen.  At least you have not lost your entire lawn.  Believe me, that's what most people end up with when something goes wrong with new sod.  You have a fraction of the replacement.  Expensive, but a drop in the bucket compared to what it could have been.

With new sod placement it will look like it never happened.

Take verrrrry good care of the sod you still have.  And order some more.
