New Home & New Lawn with lots of weeds

Question
Thank you so so much for all of your advice.  I'm so glad and grateful for your response on my fescue lawn. The Lowes Pennington product that was purchased was a 91% tall fescue blend with 9% blue grass.  99.9% weed free.  The annual blue grass you talk about looks different than what is growing with the fescue. Very little fescue.  The lime is the pelletized lime.  I look forward to a September planting of fescue grass.  Is there a certain way the fescue should be planted other than what is suggested on the bag to take the back of a rake and rake it in no more than 1/4 to 1/2 inch?  What does fescue like for germination success?  I look forward to emailing you this fall to thank you for all the wonderful advice you have given to me that my new lawn has come in so nice because someone advised me of the correct time of the year to plant fescue.  Thank you again, I will keep in touch. Nancy

Answer
Nancy, you sound like such a nice person I think it is just terrible, this Fescue Fiasco.

You really do have quite a situation with the new lawn.  Glad to hear you used Pelletized Lime, that's a little more expensive but I think it is best to use.

If you have a little free time, perhaps you can check the University of Illinois Interactive Weed Identification website (web.aces.uiuc.edu/weedid). This is the highest rated service on the internet but it requires a basic understanding of the terminology -- or a lot of patience.  Another good one is the Virginia Tech Weed Identification website (whizlab.isis.vt.edu/servlet/wid?table=grasses).  Don't let anything go to seed.  Some annual weeds set seeds at the rate of 10,000 or more per plant.  These seeds germinate at different rates, some are dormant for years, and you never get rid of them.

All cool season grasses must be planted in the cool weather of September and October.  Never forget that!
