water logged garden

Question

thankyou jan

Answer
Hi Jan;
You must have ock or hard clay under there that is keeping the soil from draining.
I would dig down there until I found out what the problem is.
You may have rock that can't be done anything about except to either have it removed which would probably be a major expense, or clay that just needs some bark mulch tilled into it to loosen it up further down.
If it is a shelf of rock, I would put a retainer wall around it, lay a layer of about 4 to 6 incjhes of large and small gravel to make a natural drain, and then put soil on top of that to the depth I needed to grow a garden.
That would be expensive, but much less so than having to excavate a lot of rock, and then move soil in to fill.
Depending on what you use for a retainer wall, you could have a very beautiful raised garden.
You can look in Landscaping magazines for ideas ( haunt the magazine and how to book section at Lowe's and Home Depot, and nurseries.)
Hopefully it will only be clay, and you can move away the surface few inches, till in a lot of bark mulch ( about 4 inches of bark mulch, and till 8 inches deep) and then move the soil back on that area.
Using an organic progran will help to work that soil down more and more each year, till you have nice rich soil instad of clay.
Invest in a load of earthworms too. The more you have, the sooner they will get that soi emended.
If you want to dig down until you hit whatever hard stuff is stopping the draining, and then write me and tell me what you found, I may be able to help you find a better for you, working situation.
