remove grass for playground

Question
I live a few miles from Salt Lake City, Utah...we bought a redwood playground center for our background. We need to remove the grass to level the ground...then place the grass back and build the playground center. (that's what I suggested to my husband) Well that was too much work so he built it anyway and now realizes he needs to make it level. (I TOLD YOU SO!!) My question is how do we remove the grass? Is there a machine we can rent? and is there a good way/bad way to level the ground before we place grass back down. (he is going to have to take a portion of the playset down so we will have room to remove the grass)

Thank you!
Amy

Answer
Hi Amy;
There is a machine called a sod cutter.
I have never seen or used one, but I think that is what to sod fams use to cut up the sod pallets we buy.
I think it also rolls it up in a roll, and you can then roll it back out again.
If there is a lot of traffic on that playground equipment, you might consider putting in sand or pea gravel, or that chopped rubber stuff they put on laytgrounds.
Playgrounds and grass don't get along well.
The kiddies tend to trample the grass down and you end up with bare ground that becomes a mud hole every time it rains.
Those surfaces I mentioned are safe and soft for kids to land on without all the skinned knees.
