mold on lawn from fertilizer

Question
a week ago i used scotts organic choice fertilizer on my lawn. as the product broke down each granule turned into white hairy mold. my lawn now stinks and is covered w/mold. its not just on the grassy areas, also growing on bare areas. its definitely from the fertilizer. what can i do to get rid of it. i'd like an organic solution.

Answer
Marilyn:

Unfortunately, bagged organic fertilizer in manufactured by the people who "put together" ingredients to make an analysis.  The ingredients of this fertilizer are described on the Scott's website as:

They are unfinished, raw products and will react as you have witnessed.  Another example of cookbook organic gardening.

Unfortuntely (again), if you simply water and let it dry out, the natural process will remove the odor and mold.  The sun will kill mold.  The water will flush heavy nutrients.  Bacteria and fungi will, eventually, metabolize the hitchhikers on the raw waste.

I understand your frustration and have tried this type of product before coming to compost, which is stable, without offensive odor, and good for plants and soil (if well made.)

Sorry about your experience.  Best wishes.
