overseeding mold problem

Question
Hi,

We just recently overseeded our lawn. We're in Southern Ontario. We did everything we were instructed to do. We've been watering 2X a day for the last 5 days since we seeded to keep the soil wet. We've now started to notice what looks to be some mold growing on some areas of the top soil we laid down. We don't get much sun during this part of the season so I'm wondering if we have been over-watering? Will this ruin our overseeding effots? What's a solution to this problem?

Answer
STOP!

Let the Soil dry out.  You are most definitely growing Fungus -- if not before, you will be.  This is a definite recipe for the wrong kind of growth in your new Lawn.

You don't want the Grass Seed to dry out, of course, but that much watering at this time of year is not necessary.  If you already have a major Fungus attack underway, the answer is still the same: Hold the water.  Fungus can't grow without moisture.  If you catch it early enough, the morning dew won't be enough moisture to keep them going, and they'll dessicate and disappear.

If you're contemplating use of a Fungicide, just say NO.

All you need to do is let the soil dry out.  Water DEEP and LONG.  Then leave the Seed alone.  This time of year, I suspect, you won't have to water again at all, period.  If it was July, August, even early September, sure you would water 2x a day, but only in a heat wave and only if you needed to.

Good question.  The solution is: Stop watering.  Or you'll be sorry.
