GROWING GRASS DURING WINTER MTHS

Question
I HAVE A BIG DOG WHO IS KILLING MY GRASS IN BACKYARD; ITS WINTER TIME NOW I LIVE IN NORTHERN N.J. WHAT CAN I DO TO EITHER FIX OR GROW GRASS NOW SO THAT I CAN HAVE A BEAUTIFUL BACK YARD THIS SPRING, BESIDES RE-TRAINING MY DOG?

Answer
James,

If you are referring to dead spots from dog urine you have a couple of options.

1 you can apply some gypsum to the affected areas and cover with compost and grass seed.

2 you can feed your dog a natural supplement available at your local pet store that changes the acidity of the urine thus eliminating the killing affect to your turf.

In any event if you topdress the entire area with 1/4 to 1/2 inch of compost in the spring and fall.  Then overseed (best done in the fall) in the spring the lawn will be healthier and more tolerant of the additional traffic.  Follow up with a good brand of organic fertilizer and your lawn will begin to look better in a season or two.
