weeds in pachysandra beds

Question
I am having an issue with thistle in my pachysandra beds. I have pulled them in the past but this only seems to make more come back. My lanscaper sprayed something last year that made them curl up and die withot damaging the pachy but would not share with me what it was. she said it was her own special. what was the stuff she used?

Answer
I am not familiar with the plant and from what I have read, some are declared noxious weeds while others are cultivated plants. I will not attempt to guess what was used by your landscaper but glyphosate has been recommended for control. The chemical has the ability to kill all green parts of plants. Therefore you must protect your desirable plants from overspray. If you decide to use it, my recommendations are to mix a (blue) food coloring into the mixture and if gets on to any part of a desirable plant, remove the sprayed portion immediately. If you do not, the chemical will travel throughout the plant and can kill it.
