dollar weeds in flower beds

Question
I was very interested to hear about using sugar on your lawn and in your flower beds to control weeds.  I live in the Gulf South where we have ants galore (fire, carpenter, etc.).  Is using sugar going to increase the ant activity?

Answer
Hi Toni;
No, you water it in, so it is disolved. It won't attract ants.
An organic program does away with all psest, because you make a healthy enviornment for lizards, toads, etc that eat all these pests.
For every harmful insect that is attracted to your yard, there are hundreds of beneficial ones that feed on the harmful ones.
Organics build rich soil. Weeds like poor soil and will not thrive in poor soil.
So make rich soil, and you have no weed problem.
For the fire anys,,, when it is time for them to swarm in the summer, get a big bag of oranges, have the kids and neighborhood kibd in for an orange feast.
Chopo the peels, and scatter them lightly over the yard.
Chop them small so they will sift down in the grass.
Orange oil is the main ingredient in effective fire any controls.
If you see a fire any hill, later on ( I don't ever, after I have scattered the peels) just drop a handful of orange peels on top of it. Next day they will be gone.
I scatter cedar bark mulch around my yard, and put a trail of it about 3 or 4 inches wide and a couple inches high, around the foundation of our house and outbuildings. Never have to worry about termites.
Cedar bark also repels fleas, ticks and a lot of other insects.
One thing though about organics.
You have to either go organic or not, because if you use chemical fertilizers etc, you will undo the effects of your organics.
I love organics.
I used the chemical way of gardening for over 40 years, and I worked so hard, and spent so much, for mediocre results.
Since being on the organic program, I work less than 10 percent as much as before, and spend even less of a percentage on lawn care products, and I have the best lawn I have ever had,
No weeds, no insects, just thick grass and well developed shrubs eyc.
I wouldn't go back to those chemicals for all the tea in China.
